Johannes Brahms, Piano sonata No. 3 movement 1

for symphony orchestra

The first movement of Brahms’s Third Piano Sonata begins with an eruption of sound that soon yields to moments of peace and tenderness, only to surge once again with renewed power. This dynamic interplay between storm and calm is what makes the work so rewarding to both perform and hear. This advanced-intermediate orchestration makes a compelling addition to any concert featuring the music of Brahms.
