Scott Fields Davis, “Bartokian Dance” for string quartet

Bartokian Dance is an energetic, rhythm-driven work inspired by the sharp accents, modal colors, and folk-dance vitality associated with Béla Bartók. Written originally for piano and later arranged for string quartet, the piece features punchy off-beat rhythms, percussive bowing patterns, and tightly interlocking lines that propel the music forward.

Syncopated motifs bounce between the instruments while the cello anchors the texture with a steady, dance-like pulse. The quartet writing emphasizes clarity, drive, and bold articulation, creating a piece that is exciting to play and engaging to hear. With its combination of folk-influenced gestures and modern rhythmic bite, Bartokian Dance makes a striking addition to any chamber program.
